As it’s a common name, several Brazilian chilli peppers go by the name pimenta de cheiro, which can be confusing, to say the least. They are all types of Capsicum chinense, and typically medium in terms of spiciness. The name includes what is also sometimes known as pimenta cumari do Pará (which is a small, orange chilli pepper) and pimenta de cheiro do Norte (a slightly longer, thinner chilli pepper which can be green, light orange, orange, red or almost black).

I’m in the process of compiling a guide to Brazilian chillies, so make sure you sign up to the Brazilian Food Guide email list and I’ll let you know when this free resource becomes available.
